Protection Against Heartworms
Heartworms are parasites that inhabit the hearts and lungs of infected dogs as young as 4-6 months of age. Heartworm disease can cause serious health problems which could eventually lead to heart failure and death. Heartworm infection is transmitted by mosquitoes and 1 in 3 dogs tested in our area (that are not on a heartworm preventative) test positive for heartworms.
Heartworm disease is preventable. Heartgard is a once-a-month chewable that is generally easy to administer to your dog and offers complete protection against heartworm disease for all sizes and breeds of dogs. You can start your dog on Heartgard as early as six weeks of age.
Roundworms can rob your dog of nutrients and could damage your dog's lungs and liver. Hookworms may cause blood loss and inflammation, which could lead to anemia, weakness, and malnutrition. Both of these parasites occupy the intestines of infected dogs and can be dangerous to puppies. They can also be transmitted to humans. Heartgard also protects your dog against roundworms and hookworms. However, if you chose not to put your dog on Heartgard, there are other treatments for these types of worms.
